Merritt Academy's story began in 1963 when founder Rachel O. Merritt set out to find a school for her two daughters that would recognize their individuality and nurture their unique abilities. Guided by the belief that children develop at their own pace and learn best through meaningful experiences, Rachel envisioned a school where every child would be known, valued, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

As a working mother, Rachel also understood the importance of supporting families. Long before extended-day programs became commonplace, she established a strong afterschool program that offered enriching  opportunities such as piano lessons and intramural sports, providing convenience for parents while expanding children's experiences beyond the classroom.

Originally known as The Talent House Private School, the school reflected Rachel's conviction that every child possesses special talents and that it is the responsibility of educators to discover and cultivate those gifts.

More than 60 years later, Merritt Academy continues to honor the principles upon which it was founded. Rachel's vision of nurturing the whole child, fostering a love of learning, and partnering with families remains at the heart of the school community and continues to guide each new generation of students.
